since 1990, jeff soderbergh has been creating original works of art using salvaged architectural structures. with materials dating between 1700 and 1940, he combines wood, metal, glass, shape, and texture to create bold, innovative designs which manipulate light and space.
design: "it's greatly important to me, that we recognize the elegant, simplistic beauty that our historical buildings have to offer. my goal is to capture a moment in history, utilize its craftmanship and style, and then enhance its beauty with modern textures and design."
coming from factories, homesteads, schools, etc., materials are combined in unlikely unions to create these unique works. "i look for a shape and design, though not necessarily in its end form. it takes quite a bit of manipulation to get there."
materials: corbels, moldings, windows, doors, columns, and angle iron all come in from many different areas of the country, primarily from the northeast where soderbergh can access them more readily. "there is an enveloping architectural history here, (in new england) but i'm trying to branch out a little more as i go. i've just acquired some fantastic colored glass from a 19th century german factory, and an unusual set of doors from paris."
the one common attribute to all of soderbergh's work is that all the materials originally belonged to some kind of structure.
accents: "i want to take something from an era where craftsmanship and detail were paramount and make it part of someone's own personal surroundings." stained glass and hand rubbed finishes are a personal trademark, although if you prefer, soderbergh will keep a distressed look on the finished product.
